About the Artist

Roman Cieślewicz brought the graphic force of the Polish Poster School to Paris, where exhibition art had to speak fast and leave a visual trace. Born in Lwów and trained in Kraków, he moved to France in 1963 and became known for photomontage that turned public imagery into sharp modern poster art. Here, the Centre Georges Pompidou commission lets his eye for collage frame a Paris subject through the language of a vintage print and a museum poster.

The Artwork

Paris-Paris 1937-1957 was created in 1981 for a Centre Georges Pompidou exhibition on the city’s postwar imagination. The title reaches across two decades, inviting viewers to think about Paris as a cultural memory shaped by change rather than a single moment. That exhibition context gives the work its purpose: it announces a show while also condensing the idea of Paris into a piece of cultural wall art. As a vintage poster and fine art print, it carries the kind of documentary presence that keeps museum graphics alive long after the event has closed.

Style & Characteristics

A vivid yellow field fills the page, and the black Eiffel Tower splits the surface into a strong diagonal path. The word PARIS appears twice, once upright and once inverted, so the eye keeps turning back toward the center. Small date fragments and the Centre Georges Pompidou text sit close to the edges, reinforcing the poster’s printed, graphic tension. The result feels immediate and severe, with the stripped palette, bold lettering, and mirrored tower giving this minimalist poster its unmistakable visual rhythm.

In Interior Design

In a contemporary living room, this art print works best above a slim black console where the yellow can brighten a neutral wall. The graphic contrast brings structure to home decor without asking for extra ornament, and the repeated tower shape gives the room a clear focal point. Framed simply, it can anchor interior decoration with a distinctly urban note, especially in spaces that already use pale textiles or dark wood. Its museum poster character makes it an easy fit for a refined modern wall art display.
